Q: When is preventative screening necessary?

A: Colonoscopy -- every 5-10 years after age 50. (Earlier if there is a family history of Colon Cancer)
Pap Smear -- every year between age 18-75. (Every three years if you have had a hysterectomy)
Mammogram -- yearly starting at age 40. (More often if there is a personal or family history of Breast Cancer)
Prostate exam -- yearly starting at age 40.
Bone Density -- every 1-2 years after menopause in women and after age 70 in men.

Q: How often do I need flu and pneumonia vaccinations?

A: Flu vaccines are administered yearly to anyone over age 65 or if you are younger than 65 and have Diabetes, Cancer, Organ Transplants, Chronic Bronchitis or Emphysema, or Asthma.
Pneumonia vaccines should be administered once if over age 65 or every 5 years if you are younger with any of the conditions listed above. If you have had a pneumonia vaccine before age 65, you should receive another one after age 65.
