REFERRAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q. What exactly is a referral?

A. A referral is approval arranged by your primary care physician (PCP) to see a specialist or for special testing not done in the office.

Q. When do I need a referral?

A. A referral is needed anytime the patient is sent to a specialist or out of the office for testing.

Q. Do I have to see my PCP before I can request a referral?

A. Yes, in most cases your PCP must see you in the office before sending you to a specialist.

Q. When can I request my referral?

A. Once you have scheduled your appointment, you should call you PCP and speak with the referral coordinator. The following information is required before a referral can be processed:

Date of service
Facility at which service is being provided
Name and phone number of the patient
Once this information is obtained, we will begin your referral.

Q. How long does it take to get a referral?

A. We ask that you call for your referral as soon as you make your appointment. For some testing we must get clearance from the insurance company. This can sometimes take up to a week.

Q. Will I have to come back to the office to pick up my referral?

A. In most cases the referral can be faxed directly to the specialist office/testing facility.

Q. Can I still go to my appointment if my referral has not been done?

A. No, if no referral was obtained you may be held responsible for services provided. You should always be sure the referral was processed before your appointment
